Summer is the perfect time to get outside, get moving, and enjoy everything Northern Pittsburgh has to offer. Walking is one of the simplest ways to improve your physical and mental health. Regular walks can help increase energy, reduce stress, improve heart health, strengthen muscles and joints, and boost your mood. The best part? You do not need a gym membership or expensive equipment to get started.
Fortunately, our area is filled with beautiful parks and scenic trails that make staying active easy and enjoyable all summer long.
One of the most popular destinations is North Park. With miles of paved walking paths, wooded trails, and lakeside scenery, North Park offers something for every fitness level. The five-mile lake loop is ideal for walking, jogging, or biking, while the park’s shaded trails provide a cooler option during hot summer days.
Another favorite in the northern suburbs is Hartwood Acres Park. Known for its rolling hills, open meadows, and peaceful wooded paths, Hartwood Acres is a beautiful place for a relaxing morning or evening walk. The park also offers plenty of photo opportunities with its historic mansion and gardens.
For those looking for a more natural hiking experience, McConnell’s Mill State Park is worth the drive. The park features scenic trails, waterfalls, forest views, and the iconic covered bridge that attracts visitors throughout the year. Trails range from beginner-friendly to more challenging terrain for adventurous walkers.
Closer to Cranberry Township, Graham Park provides paved walking paths, sports fields, and open green space perfect for families looking to stay active together. The park’s wide trails make it especially popular for evening walks and stroller-friendly exercise.
If you prefer riverfront scenery, the Three Rivers Heritage Trail offers miles of scenic pathways with beautiful views of Pittsburgh’s rivers and skyline. The mostly flat terrain makes it accessible for walkers of all ages.
This summer, consider trading a few hours indoors for fresh air, sunshine, and movement. Whether you enjoy a peaceful nature trail or a casual neighborhood walk, small daily habits can make a big difference in your overall wellness.
