Veterans Train Display at Aspinwall: A Lasting Tribute
By Paula Green

For the past several years, a 33-foot Veterans train display has been an uplifting part of the HJ Heinz Aspinwall VA Hospital at 1010 Delafield Road. Located in the main entrance atrium, the impressive exhibit wraps around three sides of the grand staircase in Building 71. The exhibit replicates so many nostalgic and memorable pieces of Pittsburgh.
“The model railroad display was constructed and is maintained by veterans. It features numerous Pittsburgh landmarks and buildings, including the Duquesne Incline, Pittsburgh Steel Mills, The Majestic, and a Pittsburgh PCC Streetcar. “Veterans are constructing these historical pieces in their spare time. They really showcase their artistic talents by handcrafting remarkable and memorable pieces of history. Great work on all fronts, yinz are heroes!” said Ronald Gionta, a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel.
Gionta volunteers at the railroad display on Mondays. “There are some veterans who are long-term residents at the VA hospital, and they like to check out the exhibit. Changes are always being made, and they like to see what is new. Gionta said it's very peaceful for them to watch, and it brings back vivid memories from when they served.

Former VA employee Jim Cristillo is credited with coming up with the model railroad idea. Volunteer train buffs from the American Legion of Foreign Wars were instrumental in lobbying the VA to make the train display permanent at the hospital. Fortunately, they got their wish!
Several veterans and over 40 apprentices from the Carpenters Training Center in Pittsburgh jumped on board and masterfully built the Lionel train track. The track is four feet wide and approximately 30 feet long.
The best part is that this display isn't seasonal; it is a permanent part of the VA HJ Heinz campus, and you can view it during regular facility visiting hours. Be sure to stop by and check out the amazing artistry.

Northern Connection magazine salutes all the veterans who have actively participated in the model railroad display at HJ Heinz VA Hospital. We thank you for volunteering your time and years of service supporting and defending our country.
