For decades, vegetable sales have been strong, especially sweet corn from September to October. However, now it is said that kids are back at school and eating habits have changed. Well, I agree with starting school, but for decades customers have sought fresh vegetables and sweet corn through the end of the season, and the harvest season can run well into October.

September is what I call the third harvest month, even though we lose about 2½ minutes of precious daylight each day. Farmers always hope and pray for a frost-free September so that we can get into October with farm-fresh crops.

August is often called the “Dog Days of August,” a fitting description for a month with the fewest events. It is the last full month of summer. Schools will welcome kids back for the new school year.
