Right in time for Mother’s Day, we’re excited to deliver you our Women’s Issue! We’re featuring some of the smart and driven women in our community, from healthcare providers to business owners.
But we also want to recognize the many women who are not in the pages of this issue. Their faces might not be on billboards or business cards, but they are essential to our neighborhoods and townships. Because in every corner of our community, women are doing work that isn’t always recognized but is always impactful.
Some are local leaders, striving to serve their constituents and make the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh an amazing place to call home. Some are world class physicians, bringing state-of-the-art medicine close to home. Others are educators in our school districts, preparing the next generation of leaders. And many are at home, raising children and managing households, building the foundation on which everything else stands.
It can be easy to assign value based on how visible someone is in the community or how high their salary is, but that wouldn’t be accurate. You can’t quantify the value of a librarian who sparks a lifelong love of reading in a young child, or a teacher who stays late to help a struggling student. The public won’t see the encouraging notes that moms are putting in their kid’s lunchbox or the work schedule she rearranges to make sure she can make it to her child’s baseball game.
This month, as we highlight the women in our community, it’s important to remember that our strength isn’t determined by a select few, but collectively. Our community is built by women who lead, teach, nurture and support, whether that’s in the boardroom or at home, or many times both. Not every contribution is recognized, but every one matters.
