5 Generations Bakers, producer of the well-known Jenny Lee Swirl Breads, has joined with two other local companies to introduce a new Jenny Lee Swirl Brew. Abjuration Brewing Company and Allegheny Mountain Malt provided ingredients, equipment, and expertise to incorporate Jenny Lee’s Apple Swirl Bread into a cinnamon-spiced sour apple ale. Christened “Spiced Apple Swirl,” the fruited sour debuted at an outdoor Oktoberfest event at Jenny Lee Breakfast Nook, 1014 Broadhead Road, Coraopolis, on Saturday, September 26.

UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has been named to the prestigious U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll for 2026-2027, earning a place among the nation’s top 10 pediatric hospitals. UPMC Children’s is now tied for the No. 1 rank in Pennsylvania and tied for No. 1 in the mid-Atlantic region, also earning national rankings in all 11 pediatric specialties that are evaluated by U.S. News & World Report.


Deep brain stimulation, or DBS, may help improve speech and swallowing problems caused by traumatic brain injury (TBI), according to a new University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine study published in Nature Communications. The study, led by Elvira Pirondini, Ph.D., assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Pitt’s Rehab Neural Engineering Laboratory, and Jorge A. Gonzalez-Martinez, M.D., Ph.D.,
professor of neurological surgery at Pitt, builds on the group’s previous work using neuromodulation to improve arm and hand movement after brain injury.
Over $2.5 million in Local Share Account (LSA) grants have been approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) to support infrastructure improvements, economic development, public safety and community projects across Allegheny County. The approved Allegheny County projects include:
Aleppo Township Authority, Allegheny County Redevelopment Authority, Bell Acres Borough, Crescent Township, Findlay Township, Leet Township, Leetsdale Borough, Moon Township, Quaker Valley Council of Governments, Sewickley Heights Borough, Sewickley Water Authority, and West View Water Authority.
More than $3.6 million in Local Share Account (LSA) grants will be coming back to northern Allegheny County. The money will fund important community improvements, ranging from facility upgrades to public safety initiatives and municipal equipment needs. The funding approved includes improvements to: Allegheny County Redevelopment Authority, Hampton Township, Marshall Township, Pine Township Richland Township, and West Deer Township.

The Allegheny County Health Department celebrated the opening of the modernized McKeesport Public Health Office with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 3. The modernized building includes improvements that support accessibility for people with different needs and abilities, including parents with strollers, older adults, and people with mobility challenges.
