“Life is good when you have a good sandwich.”  ~Keanu Reeves

National Sandwich Day is Tuesday, November 3. People celebrate it on this date because it’s the birthday of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich (born November 3, 1718). Montagu is credited with popularizing eating meat between two slices of bread.

Sandwiches come in many forms. Popular ones in America are deli meats, grilled cheese, hamburger, cheesesteak, BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato), tuna melt, meatball hoagie, chicken, Reuben, and peanut butter and jelly.

Speaking of PB&J, the average American child eats roughly 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before graduating from high school. Depending on where you live, a long Italian-style bread roll filled with meats and cheeses is called a sub, hero, hoagie, or grinder.

Sandwiches are versatile. You can choose cold sandwiches like egg, chicken, ham, and tuna salad, warm ones like a hot roast beef sandwich, or an open-faced sandwich with one slice of bread instead of two.

Some prominent chain sandwich places folks love to patronize include Arby’s, Blimpie, Charleys Philly Steaks, DiBella’s, Firehouse Subs, Jersey Mike’s, Jimmy John’s, Panera, Penn Station, Quiznos, Subway, and Wawa.

Different regions have popularized sandwiches. The po’ boy and muffuletta are legendary in New Orleans. Brisket sandwiches are the rage in Texas. Minnesota is famous for pork chop sandwiches. Reubens rule in Nebraska. Fried bologna is a fan favorite in Arkansas. Tennessee is renowned for Nashville hot chicken sandwiches. The folks in California are crazy for French dip. New Yorkers love their pastrami.

Pennsylvania's crown jewel is the Philly cheesesteak. Delaware is renowned for the Bobbie sandwich, a sub packed with Thanksgiving leftovers: slow-roasted turkey, cranberry sauce, house-made stuffing, and mayo on a freshly baked roll. Massachusetts also has a similar sandwich made with Thanksgiving leftovers; it’s called a Pilgrim sandwich.

Now that we have tempted your palate with different types of sandwiches, we must sink our teeth into this food query. Get set to don those thinking caps because it’s time to get a little trivial.
